Playing golf is fun, challenging, frustrating and even rewarding at times. Golfers get to be outside in nature but rarely stop to think about how that course got to be so beautiful.
Did you know that there are special scientists involved in the selection of the turf grass and organic matter? Did you know that there is a science behind the capture and reuse of water for the courses? Why are meteorologists important to the game? The videos below that were created by the USGA and NBC offer a behind the scenes look at golf course management:

Most beginner golfers start off with lessons to physically play but do not realize that they may need a lesson in how to keep score and keep pace while playing. The following videos that were created by the USGA and NBC provide some great insights into scoring, the course set up and pace of play. These are especially for helpful to parents of junior golfers who may not understand the game yet. Enjoy!!
On March 25, 2020 all Palm Beach County golf courses closed down operations in response to directives given to control the spread of COVID-19. While I expected the day would come, it meant that life as I know it would be changing. It also meant that securing a place to teach when the golf courses reopen would be quite challenging.
The management of Okeeheelee and Park Ridge Golf Courses will change hands this month. I am hopeful that the new management company will allow me to continue teaching on premises but as of right now no decisions have been made. I am positive that I will get back to teaching when the executive orders have been revised. I encourage you to also stay positive. Please do not allow this season to steal your life, live it to the full, make new memories and do what you can to stay healthy. This will pass and when it does, you do not want to look back at this time and wonder why you didn't do more with your "downtime." As for me, I will be spending time with my daughter, walking, running, strength training and of course doing golf drills in my backyard without a ball just like I have encouraged all of my students to do. Additionally, I am working on some short video reminders that I hope will help you sharpen your golf skills. Stay in touch and please send me videos. I am happy to provide feedback! Last year, I received a hat that was personalized with my logo. I was quite surprised by how cool it looked and I started wearing it. I ordered some to distribute to my homeschool students and then soon I was getting requests from other people who wanted to place an order for a hat. I did not seriously pursue the idea of selling anything until I realized that it could be a great way to give back. My student, Ben, is 10 years old and he has Down Syndrome. When I first started coaching Ben about 18 months ago he just wanted to putt but now he has become more of a well-rounded golfer and we are currently working towards playing in the Special Olympics. After speaking with Ben's mother, I learned that Gold Coast Down Syndrome has been a tremendous resource for their family. After several discussions with the Executive Director of the organization I received approval to raise funds for them. I had three additional golf-themed characters designed but finding the right vendors to provide the apparel remains a challenge. In the meantime, I was able to attain a limited inventory of youth polos and t-shirts that are now available for sale in this introductory phase. Details are below: Youth polo shirts $17.99 Color: White Sizes: S, M, L, XL Youth polo shirts $17.99 Color: Blue Sizes: S, M, L Youth performance t-shirts $14.99 Color: Blue Sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL Youth performance t-shirts $14.99 Color: White Sizes: S, M, L, XL Youth t-shirt $11.99 Color: Pink Sizes: XS, S, M, L Let me know if you have an interest in adult sizes.
Your support of this initial launch will help to introduce more items in the next phase. If you are new to golf you may be wondering if you should start with a group lesson or a private lesson. Both are great options. If you are social and want to make some golf friends while learning then a group lesson is for you. I have been teaching a Ladies Group Class for over a year now and it is a lot of fun not only for me but for the ladies. They not only learn golf together but they laugh together and of course they challenge each other when they play on the course together. Group lessons are also a great way to introduce children to golf. I teach a number of the junior classes that are offered at Okeeheelee Golf Course on Saturday as well as the Homeschool Group Golf on Tuesday at Park Ridge and I have found that most kids who try, stick with it because they get better each week. When I teach in a group setting, I provide instructions to the group as a whole but then I do my best to provide individual feedback to each student. At times, I notice some real talent and I may speak to the parent about adding a private lesson to their schedule. During a private lesson, I can provide specific coaching based on the student's abilities but it is more costly than a series of group lessons. The additional cost does come with the added benefit of a faster progression of learning. Many of my junior students participate in a weekly group class and schedule private lessons on a regular basis. If the junior has aspirations of playing to earn a college scholarship, private lessons are always beneficial. As for my adult students, most prefer private lessons. In my mind, how you get started with golf is not important, making the choice to get started is the real decision. Everything else will fall into place the way it should.
