Last week, I showed you how to set up buckets in your backyard to practice your short game. If your natural tendency is to practice with a square face, try switching it up and practice with an open face and vice versa. It is important to become skilled using both because you never know where your ball will land on the golf course.

updated 3/18/22 Ask me a question and I will tell you the truth. It may not be the truth that you wish to hear but it will be the truth. We teach our children to tell the truth but sometimes they lack the confidence to speak it. This is especially true when they failed to complete a chore or an assignment. We have all been there, instead of telling the truth, we evade the question or come up with some elaborate story in an effort to avoid some kind of consequence. I can't make the golfers complete any of the assignments. It is my hope that they will want to do them because they like and want to learn more about golf. There are no consequences. If I ask about an assignment, my only expectation is honesty. An honest answer cannot be a wrong answer. I have been fortunate to teach a lot of junior golfers and I love it because I believe I have an opportunity to shape the future of young people both on the course and in life. One of the ways I hope to do that is by teaching them nine core values. If you look up the word honest in the dictionary you will find a number of definitions that include: free from fraud or deception, truthful, legitimate, genuine, real, reputable and respectable. These are words that a golfer should strive to not only play by but also live by in their daily lives. In my experience, people who are willing to cheat on their scorecard in golf cannot be trusted to do the right thing in business or in life.
If you are like most golfers, you enjoy going to the driving range to practice your drive and your long shots, but the reality is that the game is won with the short game. When Brooks Koepka visited with some of my juniors at Okeeheelee Golf Course on March 17, 2018 he shared that he spends most of his time practicing his short game. Click here to hear what he said. In the video below I show you how to set up some buckets in your backyard and use this stay at home order to your advantage! Please keep sending the videos. It is great to see you all continuing to progress. I am also very appreciative of the kind thoughts that you are sharing.
So you have to stay at home but you don't want your golf game to suffer, focus on your tempo. The drill illustrated in the video below encourages you to feel the head of the club. This is important because it is the club head that makes contact with the ball. If you are able to feel the club head during the swing you are less likely to become aggressive and swing at the ball. When you swing at the ball you use your body rather than the natural rhythm of the club head. Remember you will hit the ball farther with less force. Stay relaxed. Nice and easy. Email me any questions you might have and please send a video for feedback.
Have fun with it!! On March 25, 2020 all Palm Beach County golf courses closed down operations in response to directives given to control the spread of COVID-19. While I expected the day would come, it meant that life as I know it would be changing. It also meant that securing a place to teach when the golf courses reopen would be quite challenging.
The management of Okeeheelee and Park Ridge Golf Courses will change hands this month. I am hopeful that the new management company will allow me to continue teaching on premises but as of right now no decisions have been made. I am positive that I will get back to teaching when the executive orders have been revised. I encourage you to also stay positive. Please do not allow this season to steal your life, live it to the full, make new memories and do what you can to stay healthy. This will pass and when it does, you do not want to look back at this time and wonder why you didn't do more with your "downtime." As for me, I will be spending time with my daughter, walking, running, strength training and of course doing golf drills in my backyard without a ball just like I have encouraged all of my students to do. Additionally, I am working on some short video reminders that I hope will help you sharpen your golf skills. Stay in touch and please send me videos. I am happy to provide feedback! |
